What is Clinical Waste?

Clinical waste is defined as any waste that contains human or animal tissue, blood, body fluids, excretions, or is contaminated with biologically active pharmacological drugs in whole or in part. It includes all waste produced by health-care facilities, such as hospitals, dentists’ offices, blood banks, veterinary clinics, and medical research organizations.

Clinical waste refers to a variety of waste kinds, each with its own set of management, segregation, transportation, treatment, and disposal regulations. It’s also referred to as “healthcare risk waste.”

Types of Clinical Waste

Clinical waste is unique from regular waste, as well as other sorts of hazardous waste including chemical, radioactive, universal, or industrial waste. Hazardous chemicals and radioactive materials are also generated at medical institutions. While these wastes are usually not infectious, they must be disposed of properly.

Below are some of the clinical waste types:

Infectious waste –  Waste tainted with blood and other bodily fluids (e.g. wasted diagnostic samples), infectious agent cultures and stocks from laboratory work (e.g. waste from autopsies and diseased animals from laboratories), or trash from patients with diseases (e.g. swabs, bandages).Infectious waste must be treated to decrease or eliminate the danger that it poses.

Anatomical Waste –  Any recognizable body part, as well as pathology specimens, biopsy specimens, and tissue obtained during surgery or autopsy, and/or as a result of a patient’s investigation or treatment, including limbs and organs. Anatomical waste must be kept apart from other types of medical waste.

Sharps – Any item with sharp points or edges that can puncture or cut the skin is referred to as a sharp. Medical materials, as well as broken glass or plastics, fall under this category. Sharps can cause harm and infection, therefore they must be handled with caution and precision. We provide safe and compliance collection and disposal services for all your sharps waste, whether you are a small business or a high-volume facility.

Pharmaceutical Waste – Any waste containing expired, unused, contaminated, damaged, or no longer needed medicinal medications is referred to as pharmaceutical waste. All hazardous and non-hazardous pharmaceutical waste is collected and disposed of by us.

Radioactive waste –  Waste generated by nuclear medicine, radiotherapy, and PET. We offer an end-to-end solution, with transportation and disposal handled in-house at one of our numerous licensed disposal sites with large allowed disposal limits for both solid and liquid wastes.

Managing and Disposing of Clinical Waste

Improper disposal of abandoned needles and other sharps can endanger the public and waste employees’ health. When containers break open inside garbage trucks or needles are accidentally transferred to recycling facilities, for example, discarded needles may expose waste employees to needle stick injuries and illness. Clinical waste, as well as how it is to be managed, is strictly regulated in the United Kingdom.

The following are some potential alternatives to medical waste incineration:

Microwave technologies; steam sterilization, such as autoclaving; electro pyrolysis; and chemical mechanical systems, to name a few. Clinical waste must be separated at the place of origin to guarantee proper disposal, and different waste types are handled or disposed of in different ways.
