What is Cardboard Recycling?

The term “cardboard” refers to a paper-based product that is specially engineered to be tough and durable. It’s a thicker and more durable variant of regular paper. Moving boxes, egg cartons, the cardboard packaging material used to hold items before they are purchased, shoe boxes, and cereal boxes are all examples of cardboard. The good news is  cardboard is a fully recyclable product.

As part of a larger green program, homes, small enterprises, and large corporations can recycle cardboard to help reduce CO2 emissions. The recycling of cardboard involves taking old cardboard that would normally be thrown away and remoulding it to something else, either more cardboard boxes or toilet paper.

The Cardboard Recycling Process

The following is the basic procedure used by cardboard recycling companies:

Collection: It is exactly what it sounds like: a collection. Almost every cardboard item is collected, with some being discarded on the spot according to what type of cardboard it is. For example, pizza boxes cannot be recycled.

Sorting: At the recycling plant, the cardboard is sorted into different categories depending on the materials it is made of or meant to contain. The two different types of cardboard are corrugated, like a cardboard box, and boxboard, like cereal boxes.

Shredding and pulping – the sorted cardboard is fed through a machine that shreds it into extremely small bits. It is then pulped by combining it with water and chemicals to form a slurry.

Filtration – the substance is filtered to remove everything that shouldn’t be in the final product, such as glue and tape, as well as metals like staples. It also goes through a de-ink process. This is essentially a cleaning procedure.

Final stage for reuse: The filtered and cleansed pulp is then blended with new production material in the final phase for reuse. The entire slurry is then sent through a machine that presses and dries it. After it is dry, the new sheet of cardboard is sent to cardboard and paper manufacturing factories to be turned into a new cardboard product.

Advantages of Recycling Cardboard

Recycling cardboard has numerous environmental and economic advantages.

The environmental factor – by recycling large amounts of cardboard, significantly less waste is sent to landfill. Because cardboard can be recycled, fewer trees must be cut down to meet our ever-increasing demand for packaging. As a result, this aids in the prevention of deforestation and the conservation of forests and the species that inhabits them. It also helps to maintain healthy ecosystems and oxygen levels.

The renewable aspect – wood chips from birch and pine trees are added to the cardboard during the final stage of the recycling process. Furthermore, they may be cultivated in a variety of climates, allowing them to be planted in precise locations, controlled, and harvested swiftly for recycling. It takes very little time to replace them, resulting in a closed recycling loop.

Energy is saved – in a world where energy demand is ever-increasing, any opportunity to preserve energy is invaluable.

Job creation – the entire recycling program has spawned a new waste management services industry. From research and development to transportation to industrial workers, there is employment available at all levels.
